In basic terms, a gatsby is a whole lot of food. These are the ingredients: polony, salad, chips, onion, eggs and anything else you desire. It's very popular in Durban and Cape Town

Ek het nou gatsby gegoogle en die hele storie daaroor gelees.. hoe interessant was dit nie!!! Hierdie... net 'n gedeelte daaruit....

"Today, the round roll has been replaced with a long loaf for the sake of easy cutting (Gatsbies are meant to be share
d amongst several people), and many new versions have evolved – there’s everything from a masala steak and cheese option to a calamari and fish combo to a vienna, russian sausage and polony beast called the Full House.
This colossal sandwich is not just a meal; it’s a way of life, a cultural symbol and especially for those living on the Cape Flats and an important part of their heritage....."

Masala Steak Gatsby Sandwich

http://lekkerreseptevirdiejongergeslag.blogspot.co.za/2015/11/gatsby.html
While there are different variations on the Gatsby (masala steak, chicken, polony, vienna sausage, calamari, fish, chargrilled steak, salad and a variety of sauces) the rules state is MUST always contain slap chips…or it is
n’t a Gatsby! And it should always be shared. –
In America a similar sandwich (without always including slap chips) is called the American hoagie. In France it’s called an American (and does include the chips); and in the UK it’s named the Chip Butty.
The Gatsby sandwich is popular by day with workers and by night with party-goers.
The recipe below is for the extremely popular masala (mixed spice) steak.
